2023 Prostate Cancer Warrior Walk - May 21, 2023

Updated: May 15, 2023

According to WHO data published in 2018, Prostate Cancer deaths in Barbados reached 165 or 5.99% of total deaths; the age adjusted death rate is 76.51 per 100,000 of population, ranks Barbados third in the world. Research indicates that for the period commencing January 1995, our incidence rate was 160.4 per 100,000 (standardized to the US population), disturbingly comparable to the rates in African-American and White American men (248.2 and 158.0 per 100,000 respectively). Some studies suggest that Barbados is leading prostate cancer numbers in the Caribbean.

It has been found that prostate cancer risks are lower in Caribbean-origin populations than previously believed but mortality rates appeared to be higher than reported in African-American men. Despite the significance of prostate cancer as a cause of ill health and mortality in the Caribbean and in Barbados, information about disease rates, risk factors, and the clinical and public health implications can be improved. Clinical and public health approaches to improve detection of the disease, in order to reduce the high mortality rates currently experienced are also required.

It is against this backdrop that we encourage all Scottish Freemasons to participate in a collaborative District Grand Lodge/Barbados Cancer Society Prostate Cancer Warrior Walk event on Sunday 21st May 2023. Participants are asked to assemble at 2:00 pm in front of the Main Guard, the Garrison for a 3:00 pm start. The walk will proceed north onto Garrison Road, Dalkeith onto Culloden Road, Pine Road, Tweedside Road, Roebuck Street, Country Road, Passage Road, Baxters Road to Broad Street, Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge, Bay Street, Garrison Hill around the southern and eastern sides of the Garrison Savannah onto the walking track and finishes in the area of the basketball court/National Independence Monument on the Garrison.

Our goal for this event is to raise awareness and funds as part of the national effort with the Barbados Cancer Society and their strategic partners. Indeed, we in the Scottish Constitution have been championing this cause over the past year as you no doubt will recall our “real masons wear pink” fundraiser in October last year. The Warrior Walk is therefore another step in this most important journey.

Please therefore bring the walk to the immediate and continuous attention of all your brethren and encourage them all to register (includes a t-shirt) and come out and walk on the 21st May 2023.

Registration fee is BDS $30.00.
